An Evolutionary Approach to Pattern Formation Mechanisms on Lepidopteran Wings

چکیده
In this paper an evolutionary and developmental model of cell differentiation and cell induction based on differential gene expression is introduced. By introducing morphogenetic gradients on a two-dimensional, cellular grid, the model is able to evolve and generate patterns resembling those found on moth and butterflies. Investigation of biological models has its interest for artificial evolution, because one can study the relationship between the genome and the phenotype.

Conserved developmental processes and the formation of evolutionary novelties: examples from butterfly wings.
The origin and diversification of evolutionary novelties-lineage-specific traits of new adaptive value-is one of the key issues in evolutionary developmental biology. However, comparative analysis of the genetic and developmental bases of such traits can be difficult when they have no obvious homologue in model organisms. The finding that the evolution of morphological novelties often involves ...
متن کاملPattern Formation: A Focus on Notch in Butterfly Eyespots
New observations of early and dynamic expression of Notch in developing lepidopteran wings suggests that this signalling pathway may function in defining the central focus that will specify the butterfly eyespot colour pattern.
متن کاملHomology of dipteran bristles and lepidopteran scales: requirement for the Bombyx mori achaete-scute homologue ASH2.
Lepidopteran wing scales and Drosophila bristles are considered homologous structures on the basis of the similarities in their cell lineages. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying scale development are essentially unknown as analysis of gene function in Lepidoptera is sorely limited. In this study, we used the Bombyx mori mutant scaleless (sl), which displays a nearly complete loss of w...
متن کاملExpression pattern of a butterfly achaete-scute homolog reveals the homology of butterfly wing scales and insect sensory bristles
BACKGROUND Lepidopteran wing scales are the individual units of wing color patterns and were a key innovation during Lepidopteran evolution. On the basis of developmental and morphological evidence, it has been proposed that the sensory bristles of the insect peripheral nervous system and the wing scales of Lepidoptera are homologous structures. In order to determine if the developmental pathwa...
متن کاملJumping genes and AFLP maps: transforming lepidopteran color pattern genetics.
The color patterns on the wings of lepidopterans are among the most striking patterns in nature and have inspired diverse biological hypotheses such as the ecological role of aposomatic coloration, the evolution of mimicry, the role of human activities in industrial melanism, and the developmental basis of phenotypic plasticity. Yet, the developmental mechanisms underlying color pattern develop...
